These days it seems that energy advice is available on every street corner–”turn down your thermostat”, “caulk your house” or “buy a solar panel”. Unfortunately, most of this “common sense” is either massively expensive or based on “cut back” and save. It’s hardly inspiring or practical for real people.

This book restores my confidence in practical energy solutions. It’s not “preachy” or “environmentalist”—it simply lays out how energy works and options to cut energy waste. It’s easy to read, yet packed with information. I haven’t seen technical writing this good in years.

The content is fairly evenly divided between discussions on preventing energy loss, recapturing lost energy, and obtaining “free” energy. The explanations are lucid, logical and cover the major energy options. The book also includes worksheets for calculating energy use in your own home.

Overall, what I appreciate most is this book doesn’t preach/promote a specific energy solution. Instead it simply explains the options and lets you decide what will give you the most gain for your specific house/lifestyle. Once you read this book I guarantee you won’t think about energy the same way again.

This light is very bright but I can’t seem to keep it on more than 15-30 minutes before it automatically shuts off. I’m able to turn it on again after a brief time but then it shuts off again at the same interval. No mention of an auto-off feature in the sparse documentation.

This produces ample light, and I am able to activate the light at a distance of 25 feet. I had given this as a gift but it was returned to me because it would not stay on for more than 1 hour at a time. Since I set this light up its been averaging about 30 minutes before it turns off, this is likely due to few sunny days. The solar panel is in a south facing window, however it would do better if it was outside. This uses a 4 volt battery. The last item to note is the mount for the solar panel, which is made of plastic and has already broken. My opinion is for this light to be practical, I would like it to be able to work for 4 hours at a time.

I got these about a month ago and they work exactly as promised. They arrived promptly. The only thing I’d change is how the manufacturer stores them after making them. If they were rolled onto a tube instead of folded, then the problems of lines at every fold would be pervented. Those lines can’t be ironed out because the material would not take the heat and they do not fall out after hanging (at least not after a month). I guess that would increase the cost of both production and mailing but I’d be willing to pay it. I really do like them, love that I can see out without letting the hot damaging sun into my home.
