I was pleasantly surprised when I began using the Sunbeam Health at Home heating pad (756-500). It heats up quickly and the heat is consistent. The controller is very easy to use, especially for those of us with arthritic hands.

There are no fancy features on this pad. No auto shut-off, no moist heat, an inexpensive cotton cover, and it is not over-sized. For the price I can’t complain. The consistent, even heat more than makes up for the lack of features. This is replacing another brand which cost more than three times as much, was slow to heat and did not maintain a constant temperature (varied from too hot to not enough heat regardless of the setting).

If you are looking for a basic heating pad that actually works well, this one will fill the bill.

I bought this for my aging cat, and despite the warnings (“Don’t use this for animals”), I’ve used it and he’s loved it. On the lowest setting, it is warm without hotspots, and when wrapped in a towel, it provides a very subtle, even heat. The controller is large, and I could see how someone with arthritic fingers might have an easier time operating it. The single slider moves easily, and there is a bright red LED to indicate that the unit is on, just in case you can’t tell by touch. Overall construction seems a bit chintzy – cheap plastic with a flimsy fabric cover, but as long as it continues to do the job, I won’t complain.

Your basic heating pad. Low, med., high and off. I prefer the older types over the new for two reasons. One, the digital ones have to be unplugged because the controls stay warm from the electricity coursing through them. Two, I prefer washing the cover instead of washing the entire pad, which is common on the newer models.

Excellent book for a DIYer planning on installing a hydronic radiant system. Gives basically all the information that you need to plan and install a full system. Some of the topics are pretty involved and require some basic math, but the book walks you through everything with great detail. Covers:

1) Determining heating load estimates

2) Required water temperatures and flow rates

3) Pipe installation, including pumps and expansion tanks

4) Several approaches to zoning

5) Laying PEX tube for radiant panels

The book was very useful. The only drawback was the “Hydronics Design Kit” was not included. This costs an additional from Oikos.com and is referred to many times in the book. Therefore, it is almost a requirement during use of the book.

I purchased this heating pad for my back. It does exactly what I want. It is large enough to cover the affected area, it heats up fast enough, and it keeps a constant heat as long as I need it. I particularly like the cord because of its extra length. The cord is a little stiff, but that is not a major drawback. Once I learned the routine for turning the heating pad “on” and selecting the amount of desire heat, that initial issue was resolved. The quality of the heating pad and the price on Amazon (about ten bucks less than in a major drug store chain) make this an excellent bargain.

This is a wonderful product. It’s the third brand I’ve tried, and it’s the best. You can put a pillow behind your back to help the pad conform to your back, and you don’t get any uncomfortable creases. It conforms perfectly to your back. You don’t feel any wires, cords or any other protrusions. This is the best part. The quilting makes the pad cozy to have at your back.

Also, having the option of a permently on setting and a two-hour shut-off setting is great. Depending on the day you are having, you can choose your setting. Sometimes you need constant heat and sometimes you just need a little to get you going.

There are not any “hot spots” which is very helpful. When you move, you don’t get suprised because a certain section of the pad is hotter than the rest.

I fully recommend this product. I haven’t seen or tried better.

I use this thermostat to turn on and off an attic fan when temperatures get too high. I’ve found that every few months mine needs to be turned off and reset, or the fan will just run continously. This is no big deal for my purposes, but if you use it for applications where temperature control is critical for keeping animals or plants alive, check it periodically or buy a more expensive unit.

I bought this for use in my garage workshop, to control a small gas wall furnace/space heater. The heater has its own thermostat, but it’s not programmable and it’s terribly inaccurate, prone to wide fluxuations in temperature. This device does a lovely job of keeping the shop comfortable when I expect to be there while letting the place cool off at night to save energy. It’s lovely, and such a simple idea that I wonder who no other thermostat manufacturer seems to offer an equivalent product.
