I own 5 cabins that I operate as a lodging business. I replaced an old propane water tank in one cabin with a Bosch AquaStar 125B-LP – same as the HX except with a standing pilot. That model is great! Works perfectly. When it came time to replace another cabin’s old propane water heater, I wanted the same model but couldn’t find one available so I decided on the 125HX-LP instead. Thought it was a bonus that it would even gain me a 0 tax credit because of its energy-efficiency. Well, I have been very disappointed in this model and the tax credit doesn’t make up for it. It is VERY touchy with water pressure. If the volume of water going through the tank isn’t just exactly right, the unit won’t ignite…sometimes the unit lights, sometimes it doesn’t. It’s been quite frustrating. Personally, I think the cabin water pressure is quite high for what I’m used to elsewhere, so I’m not sure just how much this unit needs for optimum operation. If it wasn’t such a pain to get another unit and uninstall this one, I’d send it back! Unless you’ve got the water pressure of a fireman’s hose coming through your pipes, I wouldn’t recommend this model.

I’ll expect it to cut our gas bill in half. These devices are standard in Europe and reduce gas burning waste by 50%. In particular the automatic start-up without pilot and electricity makes them self-contained. A major stupidity is though that all connections (water, gas) are in 1/2″ whereas code and general practice would suggest 3/4″ or 5/8″. So you go off to buy adapters… really dumb design.

I put this water heater into my guest house, where I generally have 2-6 people most weekends, to replace a traditional 40-gallon tank. It’s working great. My only warning to potential buyers is that it cost me 0 to have it installed.

Installed 4 weeks ago and it was done in a day. Note you need a 5″ vent pipe so figure replacing your old 3″. Water is hot in about 10 to 15 sec.. Would buy again!

I’m impressed with the tankless water heater, but must say that if I had know what I know now about the installation I would have thought twice about purchasing it. My old water heater vented with 3″ vent. This unit take 5″ and above 2000 ft elevation you must vent with 6″. I’m just under 4000 ft. So you must install new vent up through the roof. The unit uses more gas, but for a much shorter time, so it must have 3/4 inch gas pipe plumbed to it. All in all quite a bit of work, but I’m sure it will pay for itself in the long run. I did all the labor, if someone had to pay a plumber to install the product it would be a much longer time before it would pay for itself!

I chose this heater because I could use my existing vent. The first one was damaged in shipping but Bosch shipped a new one within a week. I use well water at a ground temperature of 54 deg. fh. The water coming out of the tap is comparable to the 50 gal tank heater I replaced. However, when taking a shower I notice a slight pressure drop when someone else opens a hot water tap. I also notice a slight temperature change as the water pressure changes with the pump cycling off and on. Overall I can put up with these quirks if I can save on propane. I might try narrowing the working range of the pump. If one had a city water supply they wouldn’t have this problem however I know the nearest municipal to me use water from a river which is 39 deg. during the winter. I’m also concerned about the maintenance the heater requires but would still install it if I had a choice.
