Many Asian households have this appliance but non-Asians seem to not know about it. This is a convenient way to always have boiling hot water at hand for making tea or instant ramen and instant soups. While the typical “American” electric tea kettle requires you to plug in and boil water each time it is turned on (thereby necessitating a wait of at least 3-5 minutes), this water heater boils water and keeps it boiling hot for days until you dispense all of it and have to refill/reboil it. I have found it very useful to have a personal water heater at my office desk (where it is the envy of all my colleagues – yet somehow they are resistant to buying one themselves due to cultural suspicion), and also one at home. One caveat is that since it is constantly plugged in, it may use up a lot of electricity. Also you have to be careful of children accidentally dispensing it and scalding themselves (this model has a “lock” button). Lastly, you should never immerse the appliance in water and it is certainly not dishwashable. The Tiger model is not cheap but it is a high quality, well-made appliance that will last for years.

The first Tiger PDHB30U kettle I purchased started having rusting spots inside only after 2 weeks. I have been gone through many hot water kettles for the past 20+ years, this is the first time I have seen anything like this.

To make a fair judgement, I returned the first one and bought an identical unit. This time it only took a week for rusting spots to show!

I strongly recommend people stay away from this kettle. Spend a little more and buy a Zojirushi kettle!

I got one of these last year because i wanted a strong heater in a small package, small footprint, to use in my bathroom, because the built in heater stopped working. It’s perfect for heating a small room like that. Then i got another one for my bedroom, it’s quiet, strong, and small, it fit into a small space near the bed. Then, i got a third one for the living room. The living room is a large room, and i use the heater like a small fire place, it really pumps out the heat. It’s not going to heat the whole living room, but sitting next to it feels like sitting next to a small fire for warmth, very pleasant, not too hot when close to it, just a nice strong warmth. In the living room, the central heating doesn’t do that well heating the lower part of the room on a cold night, the heat rises and it can be set on a high temperature and still be cold where we sit, so we use these heaters to warm up our space, nice source of heat, very portable, lightweight, sturdy. No complaints, it’s perfect for what i use it for.

Update: 09 Feb 2009. I have learned to sleep with the fan noise of this space heater. However, I’m a very heavy sleeper.

Update: 26 Feb 2009. I am keeping this Lasko heater in the living room. I have bought another heater for my 8′ x 10′ guest bedroom, the Optimus H-5210 Infrared Quartz Radiant Heater available here on Amazon. The Optimus is virtually silent, and takes a bit longer to heat a room that has a ceiling fan (from 60 degrees, it takes a couple hours to truly heat the room up to 70 degrees), and that’s fine with me.

Update: 08 March 2009. I am very happy with my Optimus in the guest bedroom!

Not good for “spot” heating, like warming up just the rocking chair area when watching TV.

This heater suits best for heating up small, enclosed spaces (about 14×14sq.ft.). I use it in my bedroom and the result is great.

The air outlet velocity is low and non vectorized by design. It relies on low velocity, de-facto free, convection as a prime source of heat transfer. This mode of heating carries an advantage for not drying skin (Example, a typical hot-air blowing heater acts like a hair dryer!), and heat very evenly within a small area. Thus make this a bad choice for “spot” heating.

Advice the last person who gave this machine a bad rating. You are like complaining about a Toyota Corolla not able to reach 200mph. Please spend some money to insulate the place and buy a bigger heater, or two for your application.

The unit was solidly built, has overheat and tip-over sensor, and the heating element was located in a remote location and it’s impossible to touch. Therefore, it scores really high on safety. However, please use common sense when using this unit (keep the unit away from small children, moisture, water, drapery…)

The unit uses a “Mechanical” thermostat and it does not control the room’s temperature very well. It would be better for Honeywell to change it to a digital thermostat.

Conclusion: Use it for what it’s best for (small, enclosed space or 14×14 sq.ft.), and you will not be dissappointed.

This little unit works very well in my bedroom and heats up very quickly just on the low setting. In the living room I’ve used it on the high setting and it also works pretty quickly. I use this unit when I am the only one who is cold and don’t want to use the central heat. I really like the option to use 360/ front function and the thermostat capability. As per the directions, you turn on the unit with the thermostat on full heat and when the temperature is as hot as you want you slowly turn it down until the unit clicks off. Then it will automatically shut on and off to keep that temperature. My only complaint, which is why I didn’t rate the unit 5 stars, is that it is too noisy for me. I mostly wanted this unit for nighttime use and when the unit clicks on and off it wakes me up.
